New Project: Fuller's Mill
The Leeds Historical Society has acquired additional property through the generosity of Jimmy Moore of Leeds. Moore has donated several acres of property at Fuller’s Mill to the organization. The society is currently evaluating the condition of the property in preparation for clearing shrubbery and adding signage.
The mill was built by Henry Little soon after he settled in the Cahaba Valley in 1819. It is located on the east side of Hwy. 119 on the Leeds side of the Little Cahaba River, across the highway from the intersection with Ziegler Road. Little also built and lived in a home just across the Little Cahaba River from the mill.
In 1910, Sloan Fuller purchased the mill. He replaced the wooden dam and overshot waterwheel with a concrete dam and turbine water wheel in 1923. In 1926, the Bearden family bought the mill. They operated it until the late 1930s, when the mill changed owners again. The mill soon fell into disrepair and was torn down.
The society is grateful to Jimmy Moore for his donation of one of Leeds’ most well-known historic landmarks.
