We need new members
By Jeff Falletta, president of Leeds Historical Society
This is the message I got from Martha Smith when I was asked to serve as president of the Leeds Historical Society for the next two years, a fact she failed to mention during our initial phone conversation.
We need new members to help continue the tremendous work that’s been done over the decades, to bring new ideas to the organization, to expand and improve our properties, to educate the public about our past, and to protect and preserve our uniqueness as a community.
The future of the society lies in the combined efforts of all of our concerned members, and we could use a hand.
To do this, we need to ask people to join. Let them know that our work is important. Explain how they can help, and don’t forget to mention that membership is rewarding and fun!
To kick off what will become an ongoing membership drive, we’re hosting a party on the grounds of the Bass House Museum. The event will be held Sunday, October 9, at 2 pm, instead of our regular meeting. We will have a panel of speakers -- natives of Leeds with stories to tell -- and a moderator to lead the discussion. Afterwards, we’ll grill out. There’ll be hamburgers, hot dogs and chips, as well as really good company.
I’m asking each member to invite at least two guests to this event. Tell a friend, a neighbor, a co-worker, or maybe even a relative to come to the Bass House and meet the Leeds Historical Society.
Let’s put our best foot forward. Do one of the most important things we can do --help the society enlist a new recruit. We’re forging a new generation to carry on the historical society’s important traditions, and now is the time to start.
