Society plans series of meetings about church histories


The Leeds Historical Society announces a special series of meetings about the history of churches in Leeds.

The series kicks off on Sunday, April 15, with a presentation by Jack Courson, who will speak about the history of Leeds First Baptist Church. The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. at the Leeds Historic Depot. The depot is located at
8335 Thornton Road in Leeds.


Courson, a native of Cook Springs, served Leeds as a city councilman for two years and as its mayor for three terms. He served as a member of the Leeds Water Works Board and served as its chairman for two years. He also has chaired the Leeds Public Education Building Authority.

A former president of the Leeds Historical Society, Courson helped restore Rowan Oaks Historic Home and the Jonathan Bass House Museum. He was named the Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year for 2009.

Other meetings in the special series about church histories are scheduled as follows:
  • June 10 : History of the Leeds Presbyterian Church by Mary Ann Mosley
  • Oct. 14:  History of  the First United Methodist Church by Lena Blair
  • Feb. 10, 2013: History of St. Theresa Catholic Church  by Betty White
  • April 14, 2013: History of Mt. Hebron Baptist Church by Martha Smith.

In addition, the society’s August 2012 meeting will feature a presentation by S. Jonathan Bass, a noted historian, Samford University professor and direct descendent of Leeds’ Jonathan Washington Bass, who built the Bass House for his family in the 19th century. This meeting will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 12, at the Bass House. The Bass House is located at 1129 Montevallo Road in Leeds.The sociey meets every other month -- February, April, June, August, October and December. The society schedules speakers to make presentations at each meeting. 

 

Yard sale set for April 20-21

Mark your calendar and plan to attend the Leeds Historical Society's spring yard sale at the Bass House on Friday, April 20, and Saturday, April 21.


Tour hours at Bass House Museum have changed

The Bass House Museum at 1129 Montvallo Road will be open for tours on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Group tours are available by appointment and can be arranged by calling Dell Harding Smith at 699-6755. The museum is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Years Day.

We have facilities available for events, such as weddings, receptions, parties, teas and reunions. Choose from the Historic Depot in downtown Leeds at 8335 Thornton Road and Rowan Oaks Historic Home at 1900 Montevallo Road. Call Margaret Little at 699-1010 to rent the Depot.
